Red eyelids and under-eyes: possible causes

Dry skin, eczema, rubbing, tears, shaving products, and cosmetics can redden the delicate skin beneath or around the eye. Itching and puffiness suggest an allergic pattern. A red eye surface, sticky discharge, or crusting may indicate conjunctivitis or another eye problem. Redness in a fold of skin is assessed differently from redness spreading across the cheek, so location and change over time matter.

Stop new creams, makeup, and cleansers near the area. Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser on intact outer skin if dryness is the main issue; keep products out of the eye. A cool compress may reduce itch and puffiness. Avoid scratching and do not apply medicated creams near the eye unless a clinician has recommended the product.

Seek urgent care for pain inside the eye, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, an eye that cannot open, or rapid swelling. Prompt assessment is needed for warmth and tenderness, fever, pus-like discharge, or redness spreading from the eyelid to nearby skin. Recurrent or persistent redness deserves a planned review to identify the trigger.
