Red dry skin around eyes: causes and care

The eyelid area has a thin protective barrier, so rubbing, tears, sweat, makeup, cleansers, hair products, and contact-lens solutions may trigger redness or flaking. Atopic Dermatitis often presents with itch and recurring inflammation. Asteatotic Eczema is associated with dryness and fine cracks, while Psoriasis can affect eyelid skin with persistent scale. Swelling, burning, watery eyes, discharge, or light sensitivity may indicate that the eye itself is involved rather than only the surrounding skin.

Rinse gently with clean lukewarm water and avoid rubbing. Stop new eye creams, makeup, fragrances, and harsh cleansers; reintroduce products only one at a time after the skin has settled. Use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on the surrounding skin, keeping it out of the eye. Emollient Therapy may support a dry barrier, but products intended for other body areas or medicated creams should not be applied near the eyes without professional guidance. Avoid sharing towels or cosmetics.

Get urgent assessment for eye pain, vision change, marked light sensitivity, severe swelling, injury, or difficulty opening the eye. Prompt review is also appropriate for pus, honey-coloured crusting, fever, rapidly increasing redness, or swelling extending beyond the eyelids. If the rash persists, repeatedly returns, or affects both eyes after a product exposure, a clinician can check for dermatitis and recommend an eye-safe treatment.
