What should you know about Red Bull and kidney stones?

Kidney stones are hard deposits that can move through the urinary tract. A stone may cause sharp flank or abdominal pain, pain that comes in waves, nausea, blood in the urine, or painful urination. Difficulty passing urine can occur if the urinary flow is obstructed. These symptoms can also have other causes, so a drink or a symptom alone cannot identify a stone.

Caffeine may increase urination for some people, and an energy drink may replace water rather than add to usual fluid intake. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated. Your personal stone type, medical history, medicines, and usual fluid intake all affect risk and management.

Drink water regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. Do not rely on energy drinks for hydration. Note the location and movement of pain, urine changes, vomiting, fever, and whether you can pass urine. Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent or recurrent symptoms. Assessment may include urine testing, blood tests, and an Abdominal Ultrasound when imaging is appropriate. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s pain medicine.

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, faintness, a single functioning kidney, pregnancy, or inability to pass urine. A blocked urinary tract with infection can become serious and needs prompt treatment.
