Reasons to induce labour early

A maternity team may recommend early birth if blood pressure problems, diabetes, bleeding, infection, poor fetal growth, or concerns about the baby’s wellbeing make waiting less suitable. Induction may also be considered after the waters break when labour does not begin or infection becomes a concern. The timing depends on gestational age, examination findings, the cervix, fetal monitoring, and your preferences. Early labour can mean preterm labour when it begins before the expected stage of pregnancy, so the team weighs newborn support needs alongside the reason for delivery.

Ask what finding is prompting the recommendation, what could happen if you wait, and whether monitoring is an alternative. Discuss how the cervix will be prepared, how contractions may be started, pain relief, and the possibility that another birth method becomes necessary. Call your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, fever, severe headache, visual changes, severe abdominal pain, or reduced baby movements. Emergency help is needed for heavy bleeding, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or a seizure. Do not wait for a planned induction appointment if these symptoms develop.

Ask how urgent birth is, which benefits and risks apply to your situation, and how your baby will be monitored. Clarify the induction method, expected setting, pain-relief choices, and what happens if it does not work. Ask whether steroid treatment or a neonatal review is appropriate at your stage of pregnancy.
