Reasons for water break in pregnancy

The fluid may be a gush or a repeated trickle. Because urine and discharge can look alike, appearance alone cannot confirm that the waters have broken. Rupture before labour can happen at different stages of pregnancy. When it happens early, it may be associated with preterm labour and can increase concern about infection or the baby’s wellbeing. Assessment usually includes your symptoms, a temperature check, fetal monitoring, and an examination chosen by the maternity team.

Place a clean pad in your underwear and record when the wetness started, its colour, and its smell. Phone your maternity unit promptly, even when there are no contractions. Avoid tampons, vaginal intercourse, and inserting products until advised. Notice contractions and usual baby movements. Seek urgent maternity help for green or brown fluid, fresh bleeding, fever, chills, worsening abdominal or back pain, regular tightening, reduced fetal movements, or a strong unpleasant smell. Emergency help is needed for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pain, or tissue or a cord-like structure at the vaginal opening.

Ask how the leak will be checked, whether you need antibiotics or monitoring, and which activities are safe while waiting. Clarify how to count contractions, how to monitor movements, and exactly whom to call overnight. Ask what findings would change the plan for observation or delivery.
