Reasons for water breaking

Fluid may arrive as a sudden gush or a slow, ongoing trickle that you cannot control. It is often clear or pale, but urine and vaginal discharge can feel similar. If the membranes rupture before labour, contractions may follow later, or the leak may occur without pain. A leak earlier in pregnancy can be associated with preterm labour and needs maternity assessment. The maternity team can check the fluid, your temperature, the baby’s wellbeing, and whether labour has started.

Use a clean sanitary pad, note the time, colour and smell of the fluid, and call your maternity unit for instructions. Do not use tampons or put anything in the vagina until you have been assessed. Keep track of contractions and your baby’s movements. If the diagnosis is uncertain, do not rely on a home test alone. Contact maternity care immediately for suspected water breaking, particularly if you are not yet at term. Go urgently for green, brown, or bloody fluid, fever or chills, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced baby movements, or feeling unwell. Call emergency services if there is heavy bleeding, collapse, or something is visible or coming through the vagina.

Ask how the fluid will be confirmed, what warning signs to watch for, and how often you need monitoring. Discuss bathing, sex, travel, medicines, and when to return. Ask how the plan changes if contractions do not begin, if infection is suspected, or if your baby’s movements change.
