Reason for Body Itching During Pregnancy

Short answer
Body itching during pregnancy can result from stretching skin, dryness, eczema or contact irritation, but itching without a rash—especially on the palms or soles—can signal a liver condition that needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Dryness, stretching, heat, sweating and product irritation
- Pattern needing review
- Strong itching without a rash, especially on palms or soles
- Safe first step
- Fragrance-free moisturiser and a lukewarm wash
What the itching may mean
As the abdomen and breasts enlarge, stretched skin can feel tight, dry and itchy. Heat, sweating, frequent bathing, fragranced products and rough fabrics can further weaken the skin barrier. Pregnancy can also bring an itchy rash or worsen an existing eczema tendency; conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Hives or Psoriasis may cause visible redness, bumps, scaling or raised patches.
A less common but important cause is intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, a liver-related condition that often causes intense itching without an obvious rash. It may affect the hands and feet and can be more troublesome at night. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause, so the pattern, skin findings and pregnancy stage all matter.
Ways to ease mild itching
Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser several times a day, particularly after a brief lukewarm wash. Choose loose cotton clothing, keep the room cool and pat rather than scratch the skin. Stop any newly introduced soap, detergent, lotion or perfume if the itching began after using it. Keep nails short and use a cool compress when the urge to scratch is strong.
Do not start an antihistamine, steroid cream, herbal product or other treatment without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy. A clinician can examine the rash, review medicines and decide whether blood tests are needed. If the skin is cracked or repeatedly scratched, infection can develop; increasing pain, warmth, pus or spreading redness deserves medical review.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly for new widespread itching, itching that is severe or worsening, itching that keeps you awake, or itching concentrated on the palms and soles without a rash. Ask for urgent advice if it comes with yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, unusually pale stools, nausea or pain under the right ribs. Seek emergency care for facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.
Mention any change in your baby's movements immediately according to the safety advice from your maternity team. A clinician may check your liver function and bile acids and arrange follow-up based on the result; do not wait for a visible rash before reporting concerning itching.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask: Could this be a pregnancy-related liver problem, eczema or contact irritation? Do I need liver-function or bile-acid testing? Which moisturiser or anti-itch treatment is appropriate for me? What symptoms should make me call the maternity unit, and when should the tests be repeated if the itching continues?

Questions people ask
Is body itching during pregnancy always a rash?
No. Dryness and skin conditions can cause a rash, but liver-related pregnancy itching may occur with little or no visible skin change.
Why is itching on the palms and soles important?
That pattern, particularly without a rash or when worse at night, can occur with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and should be reported promptly to your maternity team.
Can I use an anti-itch medicine while pregnant?
Check with your doctor, midwife or pharmacist first because suitability depends on the product, your symptoms and the stage of pregnancy.
