What should you know about really painful sore throat?

A common cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may cause throat pain alongside cough, congestion, fever, or body aches. Tonsillitis can cause swollen, red tonsils and painful swallowing. Strep throat is a bacterial possibility, particularly with a sudden sore throat and fever without a cough, but symptoms alone cannot confirm it. Glandular fever may bring marked tiredness and swollen neck glands. Allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat through drainage, while acid reflux may cause burning or a recurring hoarse throat.

Rest, drink cool or warm fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoking and other throat irritants. Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help some adults when used according to the label and personal medical advice; check before using them if you have relevant health conditions, take other medicines, or are treating a child. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because they do not treat viral causes and may delay the right assessment.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, a muffled voice, or severe one-sided throat pain with trouble opening the mouth. Seek prompt medical advice for dehydration, persistent high fever, a spreading rash, worsening symptoms, or pain that is not settling. Stay home and follow local infection guidance while feverish or acutely unwell.

Ask whether your throat needs examination or testing, whether antibiotics would help, how to manage pain safely, and which symptoms should trigger reassessment. Mention exposure to illness, fever, rash, swollen glands, reflux, allergies, and any difficulty drinking.
