Razor bumps in the groin area

Small red or skin-coloured bumps may itch, sting or feel tender after shaving, waxing or close trimming. A visible loop of hair under the surface supports an ingrown hair. Pus, crusting or increasing warmth can point to folliculitis, which is inflammation around a follicle. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, and a groin bump can have other explanations.

Pause shaving and waxing until the skin settles. Wash gently, pat dry and choose loose, breathable underwear. Do not squeeze, dig or scrape at a trapped hair; these actions can injure skin and leave darker marks. When you resume, use a clean sharp razor, shaving gel and light strokes in the direction of hair growth. A clinician can recommend a suitable topical treatment if bumps keep returning.

Arrange medical advice for spreading redness, marked swelling, worsening pain, fever, repeated drainage, a deep lump or sores that do not settle. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes rapidly more painful or you feel unwell.
