What should you know about a RAST food allergy panel?

The blood sample looks for food-specific IgE antibodies. A positive finding can show sensitisation, but it does not prove that eating that food caused a reaction. A negative finding does not assess foods that were not included and may not explain every symptom. Timing, amount eaten, preparation, symptoms, and other illnesses all matter.

Food allergy can cause hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, or itchy mouth and throat soon after eating. A clinician may distinguish it from intolerance, infection, reflux, or another condition.

Write down the food, portion, timing, symptoms, and treatment used for each suspected reaction. Do not test a suspected food at home after a concerning reaction, and do not make broad exclusions without professional advice. Ask whether you need a written action plan, label-reading guidance, or supervised testing.

Seek emergency treatment immediately for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms after food. An itchy throat can be an early warning sign, especially when it occurs with other body symptoms. Use prescribed emergency medicine according to your plan and do not wait for a blood-test result.
