Rash that comes after fever: what to know

When fever improves before a rash appears, the sequence can fit a viral illness. The rash may be pink, blotchy, raised, itchy, or smooth, and may begin on the trunk before spreading. Timing alone cannot identify the cause; recent medicines, exposures, vaccination, and other symptoms also matter.

Write down the fever's course, the rash's first location, whether it fades under pressure, and any sore throat, cough, diarrhoea, joint pain, swelling, or mouth and eye changes. This record makes a clinical assessment more useful.

Encourage fluids and rest, keep the room comfortably cool, and use loose clothing. Avoid scratching and scented soaps. Do not apply steroid, antibiotic, or antihistamine products to a child without advice, and do not share towels if an infectious rash is possible.

Take photographs as the rash changes and list every medicine taken recently, including non-prescription products. A pharmacist can advise on suitable itch relief when there are no warning signs.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, collapse, confusion, severe drowsiness, rapidly spreading purple spots, skin peeling, or painful sores in the mouth or eyes. Seek prompt medical advice if fever returns, the rash is painful, or the person is deteriorating.
