Rash remedies: choosing safe next steps

A dry, itchy patch might reflect Atopic Dermatitis, while a rash after a product may be Contact Dermatitis. Ringworm can spread at the edge of a scaly patch, and Scabies often causes intense itch with a pattern that needs targeted treatment. Drug Rash can follow a medicine and may become serious. Psoriasis, Heat Rash, and Intertrigo also have different care needs. Similar-looking skin changes can require opposite treatments, so using someone else’s prescription or several remedies together can obscure useful clues.

Stop newly introduced fragranced products and avoid harsh soaps, scrubbing, and hot water. Wash gently, pat dry, and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on dry, intact skin. Keep folds cool and dry, wear loose clothing, and avoid picking. Take a clear photograph and note onset, exposures, medicines, itch, pain, and spread. A pharmacist can check a non-prescription option for your age, pregnancy status, allergies, medicines, and body site. Do not apply household substances or strong medicated creams to sensitive skin without advice.

Seek assessment if a rash does not settle, keeps returning, spreads, becomes painful, leaks fluid, forms crusts, or affects sleep. Get urgent help for fever with a rapidly changing rash, facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, purple spots, blisters, peeling, or involvement of the eyes or mouth.
