Rash over the entire body: what to know

A sudden widespread rash can follow a new medicine or supplement, an infection, or contact with an irritating substance. Drug Rash may begin after a treatment and can change quickly. Contact Dermatitis is more often strongest at exposure sites, although extensive exposure can affect broad areas. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis may involve multiple regions over time. Heat Rash appears in warm, occluded areas, while Scabies commonly causes intense itch and may affect household contacts. The rash’s texture, distribution, and speed of change help a clinician assess it.

Avoid new cosmetics, fragranced products, hot showers, and overheating. Cleanse gently, pat rather than rub, and apply a bland moisturiser if the skin is dry and intact. Photograph changes and make a list of every medicine, supplement, and recent exposure. Do not begin several new creams at once, and do not discontinue an essential prescribed medicine without speaking with its prescriber. Limit close skin contact and sharing of towels if an infectious rash is possible.

Seek urgent medical care for a rapidly spreading rash, fever, severe skin pain, marked tenderness, or feeling very unwell. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, swelling of the mouth or face, blistering, peeling, eye involvement, painful mouth sores, or purple spots that do not fade when pressed.
