Rash on the vulva after your period: what to know

Pads, liners, fragranced wipes, detergents, and close-fitting underwear can irritate delicate outer skin. Blood, sweat, and prolonged dampness may add friction. Contact Dermatitis can cause redness, burning, itching, or a rash where a product touched the skin. Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis may flare with irritation. Ringworm and other infections can also affect the groin, often with a defined edge or spreading patches. Vulvar itching or soreness can have causes that need an examination, and the appearance alone cannot confirm one.

Rinse the outer vulva with lukewarm water, pat dry, and pause fragranced products, vaginal washes, douches, and new pads or liners. Wear loose, breathable underwear and change out of damp clothing. Avoid scratching; a cool, clean compress may soothe the skin. Do not put steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams on the vulva unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised that specific product for you. Note when the rash began, what touched the area, and whether it recurs after each period.

Arrange medical advice if the rash persists, returns, spreads, or comes with discharge, odor, sores, blisters, pain when urinating, or marked swelling. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a rash with widespread blistering or peeling.
