Rash on the trunk of the body: what it may mean

A rash following an area touched by a product or fabric may be Contact Dermatitis. Heat, humidity, and occlusion can trigger Heat Rash, while damp rubbing at the navel, groin, or other folds can contribute to Intertrigo. Itchy, scaly rings may occur with Ringworm. Scabies can cause marked itch, often worse overnight, and may affect household contacts. Atopic Dermatitis often causes dry, inflamed, itchy skin. Psoriasis may form well-defined scaly plaques. A new widespread rash after starting a medicine can be Drug Rash and should not be self-diagnosed.

Take a clear photograph in good light and record the date, symptoms, and products or medicines used around the onset. Keep the area cool and dry, choose loose clothing, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and moisturise dry skin with a familiar product. Do not share towels, clothing, or bedding if an infectious cause is possible. A clinician can distinguish these conditions by examining the shape, scale, borders, and distribution.

Seek emergency care if the eruption comes with breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, widespread blistering, peeling, severe skin pain, or involvement of the mouth or eyes. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever with a fast-spreading rash, purple spots, pus, or marked tenderness. Book a routine appointment when it lasts, recurs, expands, or interferes with sleep, even if you otherwise feel well.
