Rash on neck after fever: what to know

The neck is easily irritated by sweat, collars, jewellery, hair products, and fragranced skin care. A fine, itchy rash may follow heat or contact with an irritant. A broader rash can occur as an infection settles or after a medicine is introduced. Note whether it began under a collar, around the hairline, or across the whole neck.

Warmth, tenderness, swelling, and a widening area of redness are more concerning for a skin infection such as cellulitis. Itchy fluid-filled spots may fit chickenpox, particularly when spots appear in crops or affect other areas. These clues are not a diagnosis, so include the fever timeline and all exposures when seeking advice.

Remove necklaces or tight collars, keep the neck cool, and cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free product. Pat rather than rub, and avoid shaving over inflamed skin. Do not apply multiple new creams at once. Photograph the area, mark its edge if redness is spreading, and note itch, pain, temperature, and any medicine taken before the change.

Call emergency services for throat tightness, wheezing, trouble swallowing or breathing, sudden facial or neck swelling, faintness, or confusion. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly expanding redness, severe tenderness, purple spots that do not fade with pressure, blisters, peeling, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Contact a clinician if fever returns, the rash becomes hot, or symptoms are worsening rather than settling.

Ask whether the rash could be caused by contact, heat, infection, or a medicine; whether any product should be stopped; and how soon it should be reassessed. Mention allergies, eczema, immune conditions, recent hair or skin products, and exposure to contagious illness.
