What should you know about an itchy rash on your arm?

Most people with Atopic Dermatitis notice intense itching, dryness and recurring irritated skin. Contact Dermatitis may begin where a cleanser, plant, watch strap or other material touched you. Scabies can cause marked itch, often worse at night, with small bumps and possible itching among household contacts. Ringworm may form a scaly, ring-like edge. Heat Rash tends to appear as small prickly bumps after warmth or sweating. Psoriasis can create persistent, scaly plaques. A Drug Rash may appear after starting or changing a medicine; never stop an essential medicine without prescriber guidance.

Keep fingernails short and use a cool, clean compress instead of scratching. Wash gently, avoid hot water and apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Pause newly introduced creams, perfumes and detergents if safe to do so, and wash clothing or bedding that may be irritating. Avoid sharing towels until an infectious cause has been excluded. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-itch, anti-inflammatory or antifungal treatment suits the appearance.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, severe illness or purple non-blanching spots. Seek prompt review for a hot, painful, rapidly enlarging rash, fever, pus, or a rash that starts soon after a medicine. Arrange an appointment if itch prevents sleep, spreads to others, or does not settle with gentle care.

Ask whether the pattern fits eczema, contact allergy, infection or a medicine reaction; which products should be avoided; whether anyone else needs assessment; and how long to try the recommended treatment before returning.
