Rash on Hands and Wrists: What to Know

A rash on the hands and wrists may reflect contact irritation, eczema, infection, friction, heat, or a medicine reaction. Watch where it started, whether it follows a watchband or glove, and whether itching is worse at night.

A rash beneath a watch, bracelet, glove, or cuff can suggest Contact Dermatitis from a material, cleanser, or trapped moisture. Dry fissures and recurring itch can occur with Atopic Dermatitis. Small itchy bumps around the wrist, especially with night itch or affected contacts, can occur with Scabies. A scaly expanding edge may suggest Ringworm; thicker plaques can occur with Psoriasis. Heat Rash and Drug Rash are other possibilities, depending on timing and distribution.

Remove watches, bracelets, and suspected gloves temporarily, and rinse away possible irritants without scrubbing. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after gentle washing. Keep the wrist cool and dry, and do not scratch or share towels. Record new products, workplace exposures, medicines, and the first day of symptoms. Do not apply leftover prescription creams to a ring-shaped or weeping rash without advice.

Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread blistering, peeling skin, or sores in the mouth or eyes. Arrange prompt review for fever, pus, increasing warmth, marked tenderness, fast spread, or red streaks. A clinician should assess a persistent, recurrent, sleep-disturbing rash or one that began soon after a medicine.
