Rash on face around mouth: what to know

Redness, scaling, tiny bumps, cracking, or burning can follow saliva, lip products, toothpaste, cosmetics, shaving products, or frequent wiping. A condition such as Contact Dermatitis can cause a reaction where an irritant or allergen touches the skin. Atopic Dermatitis may make the surrounding skin dry and sensitive. Other possibilities include Psoriasis, Ringworm, or a drug-related eruption; a clinician may need to examine the border, surface, and distribution to separate them.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause newly introduced lip, dental, cosmetic, and fragranced products one at a time, and avoid licking or scrubbing the area. Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturizer on intact outer skin. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams near the lips unless a clinician has advised that product and location. Note when it began, possible exposures, and whether it spreads.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt medical review if the skin is hot, very painful, oozing, crusted, blistered, or associated with fever. Book an appointment if it persists, recurs, reaches the eyes, or does not improve after removing a suspected trigger.

Ask whether the distribution fits Contact Dermatitis or another condition, which products should be stopped, and whether any treatment is safe around the mouth. Bring a list of medicines and products, plus dated photographs showing changes.
