Rash on the back of the neck at the hairline

Hair products, dye, shampoo, collars, helmets, and friction can irritate this narrow strip of skin. Heat and sweat may cause small prickly bumps, while scratching can add soreness or broken skin. Scaly patches may fit atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, or a fungal infection such as ringworm. A rash that is very itchy at night, or that affects close contacts, needs assessment for scabies. New medicines can cause a more widespread drug rash. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Pause newly introduced hair or skin products and rinse the area gently with lukewarm water. Keep the hairline cool and dry, avoid tight collars and scratching, and use a clean towel and pillowcase. Do not share brushes, hats, or hair tools while a contagious cause is possible. Photograph the rash and note products, sweating, haircuts, and medicines that came before it. A clinician can examine scaling, bumps, crusting, and follicle involvement and choose treatment accordingly.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, severe pain, blistering, skin peeling, or a high fever. Arrange prompt medical review if there is pus, warmth, marked tenderness, a red streak, or worsening after a new medicine. Book a routine appointment if the rash persists, keeps returning, forms a ring, or causes hair loss.
