Rash on the back of the neck

The neck collects heat and moisture and is exposed to collars, hair products, fragrances, and hair removal. Heat Rash or Intertrigo may affect damp areas. Contact Dermatitis can follow shampoo, dye, perfume, jewellery, or fabric. Atopic Dermatitis may look dry and scaly, while Psoriasis can form a well-defined thicker patch near the hairline. A circular scaly edge may suggest Ringworm. The location narrows the clues but does not establish a diagnosis.

Inspect the hairline and nearby skin for scaling, bumps, crust, blisters, swelling, or broken skin. Note new products, hats, exercise, sweating, haircuts, sun exposure, and medicines, and photograph the area if it changes.

Rinse away sweat and product residue, cleanse gently, pat dry, and avoid tight collars or rubbing until the skin settles. Pause newly introduced hair and fragrance products. Keep the area cool and dry, and do not scratch or apply several medicated products without advice. A clinician can examine the hairline and decide whether treatment for dermatitis, infection, or another cause is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread blistering, peeling skin, or sores in the eyes or mouth. Get prompt assessment if the neck becomes hot, very painful, swollen, rapidly red, or drains pus, especially with fever. Arrange a routine appointment for a rash that persists, recurs after products, spreads, or causes hairline scaling that does not settle.
