Rash near the groin: what should you know?

Intertrigo can develop where warm, moist skin rubs together. Contact dermatitis may follow a new soap, detergent, pad, lubricant, or fabric. Ringworm often has a scaly edge and may extend outward, while heat rash follows sweating. Atopic dermatitis or psoriasis can also affect nearby skin. Scabies is more likely when itching is intense at night and close contacts itch too.

The groin includes sensitive skin, so genital pain, discharge, sores, or urinary symptoms need a clinician's assessment rather than trial-and-error creams.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, change out of damp clothing, and choose loose breathable underwear. Reduce rubbing and avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, and unprescribed combination creams. Do not share towels. A clinician can distinguish irritation from fungal infection and select treatment; the wrong steroid or mixed product can hide an infection and delay appropriate care.

Arrange an appointment if the rash lasts, returns, spreads beyond the fold, or remains itchy despite keeping the area dry. Seek urgent care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, pus, black or dusky skin, blisters, or difficulty passing urine.
