Rash with little bumps on arms: what should you know?

Dry, itchy patches may fit atopic dermatitis. A rash where soap, metal, plants, cosmetics, or fabric touched the skin may fit contact dermatitis. Heat rash tends to follow sweating and warmth. A scaly ring can occur with ringworm, while intense night-time itch or affected household contacts raises the possibility of scabies. Psoriasis may produce well-defined, scaly areas. A new medicine can cause a drug rash.

These clues are not a diagnosis. Tell a clinician when it started, whether both arms are involved, and whether the bumps are rough, fluid-filled, scaly, painful, or spreading.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, use an unfragranced moisturiser, and avoid picking or scrubbing the bumps. Pause newly introduced skincare or laundry products if they seem relevant. Keep the skin cool and wear soft, loose sleeves. Do not share towels or clothing if an infection is possible, and avoid applying steroid cream to a suspected ring-shaped infection unless a clinician advises it.

Book an assessment if the rash persists, recurs, spreads, or does not respond to gentle care. Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, swelling of the lips or tongue, fever with a rapidly spreading rash, widespread blisters, skin peeling, purple spots, or marked pain.
