What should you know about a rash in the groin area?

Sweat, close-fitting clothing, shaving, and skin-to-skin rubbing may inflame the groin. Intertrigo can affect the crease, while ringworm often has a scaly advancing edge. Contact dermatitis may follow soap, detergent, pads, wipes, or a topical product. Psoriasis can involve the groin with a smooth red patch, and atopic dermatitis can cause dry, irritated skin. A drug rash may appear after a medicine. Scabies is more likely when intense itching affects other household members or other body sites.

A groin rash is not automatically a sexually transmitted infection, but genital sores, discharge, burning urination, or recent sexual exposure should be mentioned privately to a clinician. Avoid guessing from colour alone.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented cleanser, then pat the groin dry. Change damp underwear promptly, wear breathable loose clothing, and avoid shaving or fragranced products until the skin settles. Do not scratch, share towels, or use a combination cream without advice. Keep any cream on external skin only unless its instructions specifically say otherwise. If symptoms continue, a clinician or pharmacist can help distinguish a fungal treatment from an anti-inflammatory or barrier approach.

Arrange a review if the rash persists, enlarges, keeps returning, or is unclear after a new product or medicine. Seek prompt care for severe pain, warmth, swelling, pus, open sores, blisters, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or difficulty urinating. Do not delay assessment if the penis, vulva, or scrotum is swollen or very tender.
