Rash because of fever: what should you know?

The immune response to an infection can produce both raised temperature and skin changes. Viral illnesses may cause widespread pink or red spots, while chickenpox can cause itchy blisters. A localized hot, swollen, painful rash is different from a mild widespread rash and may indicate cellulitis. Medication reactions can also cause rash during treatment for a fever. Record whether the skin change blanches when pressed, whether it itches or hurts, and whether it involves the eyes or mouth.

Rest, drink regularly, and keep the room comfortably cool. Use a simple temperature log and photograph the rash so changes are easier to describe. Wash hands after touching affected skin and avoid sharing towels. Do not give medicines intended for another person, and check with a pharmacist before using an antihistamine or topical product, particularly for a child, pregnancy, or chronic illness.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, collapse, confusion, a stiff neck, or a purple rash that does not fade when pressed. Seek same-day advice if the rash spreads quickly, becomes painful or blistered, the fever returns, drinking is difficult, or the person becomes unusually drowsy. Arrange review sooner for infants and people with weakened immunity.
