Rash around your mouth: what to know

Burning, dryness, and cracking can follow repeated lip licking, drooling, wiping, or exposure to toothpaste, cosmetics, fragrances, and food. Itch and rough patches may occur with atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Clusters of small bumps around the mouth should be checked rather than repeatedly treated with steroid cream. Yellow crust, tenderness, or spreading redness may signal infection. A rash does not by itself identify a cause, and several conditions can look similar around the lips.

Clean gently, rinse toothpaste from the surrounding skin, and pat dry. Stop new lip balms, cosmetics, fragranced products, and harsh exfoliants while the rash is active. Try not to lick or peel the skin. A plain fragrance-free moisturiser can reduce dryness. Avoid sharing lip products or towels if there are sores or crusts, and photograph changes before applying treatment.

Arrange a review if the rash persists, returns often, becomes painful, cracks deeply, crusts, or spreads beyond the mouth. Get urgent help for sudden lip or tongue swelling, breathing trouble, faintness, widespread blisters, or eye symptoms. Medical examination is especially useful before treating an unexplained rash with prescription or medicated creams.
