Rash around nose and mouth: what to know

Dryness, scaling, or cracking can occur when saliva, tissues, cleansers, cosmetics, or fragranced products repeatedly irritate delicate skin. Itchy patches may fit atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Small bumps clustered around the mouth deserve an assessment, especially if steroid cream has been used there. Ring-shaped scaling, crusting, spreading redness, or sores can point toward an infection or another skin condition such as psoriasis. These appearances overlap, so the rash itself does not establish a diagnosis.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause newly introduced skincare, makeup, shaving products, and lip products until the skin settles. Avoid licking, rubbing, picking, and using leftover prescription creams on the face. A bland, fragrance-free moisturiser may protect cracked skin. Take a clear photograph and note foods, products, medicines, heat, and timing if episodes recur.

Arrange medical review if the rash is spreading, painful, recurrent, crusted, oozing, or not settling with gentle care. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, rapidly worsening facial swelling, or eye involvement. A clinician may need to examine the distribution and ask about exposures before choosing treatment.
