Rash around the mouth after fever: what should you know?

Saliva, runny-nose discharge, lip licking, and dry skin can irritate the area during or after an illness. A viral illness may cause spots elsewhere as well. Crusting, oozing, warmth, tenderness, or spread beyond the original area can signal a bacterial skin infection such as cellulitis. Fever with itchy blisters elsewhere can occur with chickenpox. Painful sores inside the mouth, swollen lips, or eye symptoms change the urgency. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a plain protective ointment only if a pharmacist or clinician considers it suitable. Discourage licking, rubbing, and picking. Do not share towels, cups, lip products, or utensils while an infectious cause is possible. Offer fluids and soft foods if the mouth feels sore. Note new toothpaste, cosmetics, medicines, and foods, since these details may help the assessment.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing lip, tongue, or facial swelling, faintness, or unusual sleepiness. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, severe pain, pus, extensive blisters, inability to drink, dehydration, eye involvement, or fever that returns. A child who is drooling because swallowing hurts should be assessed urgently.
