What should you know about rash around groin?

A moist, tender rash where skin touches skin can fit Intertrigo. An itchy, scaly rash extending onto the upper thigh may be Ringworm. Contact Dermatitis can follow a new soap, detergent, pad, lubricant, or fabric. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can also affect the groin. Scabies causes intense itch and may affect close contacts, while a Drug Rash is usually more widespread. Genital sores, discharge, or pain with urination point to a need for medical assessment rather than self-treatment.

Wash gently, dry by patting, and change damp underwear or exercise clothing. Choose loose, breathable garments and reduce rubbing. Avoid fragranced washes, deodorants, shaving over broken skin, and sharing towels. Do not use a combination cream or strong steroid without advice; it may worsen a fungal rash or hide its edge. A clinician can distinguish fungal infection from irritation and select treatment for the correct site.

Get prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, darkening or blistering skin, or swelling of the genital area. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty with a widespread rash. Arrange an appointment if the rash recurs, affects another household member, involves sores or discharge, or does not improve after removing an obvious irritant.
