What should you know about rash and swollen lip?

New lip balm, toothpaste, cosmetics, food, or medicine may trigger Contact Dermatitis or a broader Drug Rash. Atopic Dermatitis can affect the skin around the mouth, while infection may cause soreness, crusting, or blisters. Swelling can develop with an allergic reaction even before other symptoms become obvious. A clinician considers timing, exposures, the exact rash, and whether the tongue, throat, eyes, or breathing are involved.

Stop any newly introduced lip or facial product and gently rinse the area. Do not puncture blisters or apply multiple creams. Keep a list of medicines, foods, supplements, and products used before the swelling began; photograph the change if it is safe to do so. If a prescribed medicine may be involved, contact the prescriber promptly for individualized instructions rather than making a lasting change on your own.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, dizziness, collapse, or rapidly progressing facial swelling.
