Rash and diarrhoea without fever: what to know

A new food or medicine can affect the skin and gut at the same time. Viral gastroenteritis may cause diarrhoea without a raised temperature, and a viral rash may occur alongside it. Irritation, eczema, or another digestive problem can also produce two symptoms that are not directly linked.

Describe the stool’s frequency and appearance, the rash’s location and texture, and whether itching, swelling, vomiting, stomach pain, or mouth sores are present. Recent meals, travel, antibiotics, and sick contacts can help a clinician assess the pattern.

Sip fluids regularly; oral rehydration solution may help replace water and salts when diarrhoea is frequent. Eat small, simple meals if hungry and avoid foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Wash hands carefully and do not prepare food for others while diarrhoea continues.

Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine or take an anti-diarrhoea product without advice, particularly for a child, pregnancy, blood in the stool, or significant abdominal pain. Keep a short symptom diary and photograph the rash.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, severe dehydration, confusion, or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange urgent assessment for blood or black stool, severe or localised abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, very little urine, a painful or blistering rash, or symptoms in a young baby. Contact a clinician if diarrhoea persists or the rash continues to spread.

Ask whether the symptoms suggest an allergic reaction, infection, medicine effect, or two unrelated problems; whether a stool test or skin review is needed; and which fluids and medicines are suitable for your age and health.
