Rash after a wasp sting: what to know

Redness, warmth, swelling, or itching near the sting can occur as the immune system responds to venom. The area may enlarge for a while before settling. A rash that appears away from the sting, widespread hives, swelling of the lips or tongue, vomiting, dizziness, or chest tightness can indicate a body-wide allergic reaction rather than a skin-only problem. The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Infection is another concern if pain, warmth, pus, or worsening redness develops after the initial reaction.

Move away from the wasp and avoid scratching the skin. Wash the area gently with soap and water, then use a wrapped cold pack for short periods to ease swelling. Keep the affected limb raised when practical. If a clinician has previously prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector for severe allergy, use it according to your emergency plan and seek emergency help. Do not rely on home care if symptoms are spreading or involve breathing, swallowing, faintness, or repeated vomiting. Photograph the rash and note when the sting and symptoms occurred, especially if assessment is needed.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, blue or pale lips, or rapidly spreading hives. Seek prompt medical assessment for a rash covering areas away from the sting, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, or symptoms that continue to worsen. Arrange a routine review if the skin does not begin settling, keeps recurring, or becomes crusted or draining.
