Rash after a mosquito bite: what to know

Mosquito saliva can trigger an itchy, raised bump around the bite. Some people develop a larger area of redness and swelling, especially when the immune system reacts strongly. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter, causing increasing warmth, pain, pus, or fever. Note when the bite occurred, how quickly the rash changed, whether new bites appeared, and whether anyone else has itching.

Use insect screens, covered clothing, and an appropriate repellent to reduce further bites. If the itch is severe, the swelling is large, or the skin is repeatedly damaged by scratching, arrange a clinical review rather than repeatedly treating it without advice.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread hives after a bite. Get prompt medical assessment for fever, rapidly expanding redness, marked pain, pus, red streaks, or swelling near an eye.
