Short answer

A dark spot corrector may fade some pigmentation, but safe improvement depends on identifying the cause and protecting skin from light.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What dark patches can represent

Brown or grey patches can follow acne, eczema, irritation, or an injury; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma often affects the face in larger, fairly symmetrical areas and may be influenced by light and hormones. Sun spots tend to appear on repeatedly exposed skin. Fine scale can make tinea versicolor look lighter or darker than nearby skin. A new, changing, bleeding, or very different mark needs examination rather than cosmetic treatment alone.

How to use a cautious approach

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently; visible light can also worsen some facial pigmentation, so tinted protection may be discussed. Introduce one fading product at a time and stop if burning, swelling, blistering, or a rash develops. Avoid unlabelled bleaching mixtures, abrasive scrubs, and applying strong products to broken skin. A clinician can choose between topical care, a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment after examining the pigment and your skin tone.

When to seek care

Book a skin assessment for a patch that changes quickly, has an irregular border or several colours, bleeds, crusts, hurts, or fails to settle after inflammation resolves. Seek earlier advice when pigmentation is widespread, itchy, scaly, or accompanied by new medicines or other symptoms. A diagnosis matters because lightening an infection or an active rash without treating it can delay improvement.

Questions for your doctor

What is the likely cause of my pigmentation? Which ingredients are suitable for my skin, and how slowly should I introduce them? Would a peel, brightening procedure, or laser be appropriate, and how will you reduce the risk of irritation or darker marks?

Can dark spots disappear quickly?

Some marks fade as inflammation settles, while melasma and sun-related pigment often need sustained care.

Is a stronger corrector always better?

No. Irritation can deepen pigmentation, particularly in skin that marks easily.
