Short answer

Randomly swollen feet can result from standing, injury, inflammation, medication, or circulation problems, and one-sided sudden swelling needs prompt assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Compare
Check whether one or both feet are swollen and note redness, warmth, tenderness, and skin changes.
Escalate
Sudden one-sided swelling or swelling with breathing symptoms needs urgent help.

What may be behind swelling

Swelling in both feet after prolonged standing may relate to fluid pooling, while swelling after a twist or impact may indicate local injury. Redness, warmth, and intense tenderness can occur with inflammation such as Gout. Although the listed knee conditions do not explain every swollen foot, a Baker's Cyst or knee inflammation can affect how the leg feels and moves. An ACL Tear, Meniscus Tear, Knee Bursitis, or Knee Osteoarthritis may cause knee symptoms alongside altered walking. Compare sides and note calf pain, breathlessness, fever, skin changes, and whether pressing leaves a dent.

What to do

If swelling followed an injury, rest from aggravating activity, elevate the leg, and use a wrapped cold pack for brief periods. Avoid tight footwear and check the skin for pressure areas. Do not massage a suddenly swollen, painful, or warm one-sided leg before medical advice. A clinician can examine the foot, ankle, knee, and circulation, and may consider treatment such as Joint Aspiration when a joint contains excess fluid.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for swelling with chest pain, sudden breathlessness, faintness, or coughing blood. Get urgent assessment for sudden one-sided swelling, calf pain, a hot red foot, fever, severe pain, inability to walk, or a cold, pale, numb foot. Arrange a visit when swelling keeps returning, lasts without a clear injury, or comes with new knee stiffness or instability.

Questions for your doctor

Is the swelling coming from the foot, ankle, knee, or circulation? Does the pattern suggest inflammation, injury, or fluid retention? Would examination or Joint Aspiration help clarify a swollen joint?

Questions people ask

Can knee problems be linked with foot swelling?

Knee pain can change walking and coexist with swelling lower in the leg, but persistent foot swelling needs its own assessment.

Should a suddenly swollen leg be massaged?

Avoid massage until a clinician advises, especially when swelling is one-sided, painful, warm, or sudden.
