Raised bump on the back of the neck: what to know

Small itchy or prickly clusters after sweating can fit [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/). Red, tender bumps around hairs may be [Folliculitis](/conditions/folliculitis/), especially after friction, close clipping, or an occlusive collar. Rough, uniform bumps can occur with [Keratosis Pilaris](/conditions/keratosis-pilaris/). A firm smooth white bump may be [Milia](/conditions/milia/), while a persistent purplish or scaly patch has other possible causes, including [Lichen Planus](/conditions/lichen-planus/). Location alone cannot distinguish these conditions.

Keep the area cool and dry, wash gently, and reduce rubbing from collars, helmets, hair products, or close shaving. Do not pop, cut, or freeze the bump yourself. Note its size, colour, tenderness, itch, drainage, and whether more bumps appear. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus with worsening swelling, or difficulty moving the neck. A bump that bleeds or fails to heal also needs medical review.

Ask whether the bump is centred on a hair follicle, whether an allergy or friction trigger is present, and whether examination alone is enough to choose treatment.
