Short answer

Quotidian fever is a fever pattern that returns daily, and its cause must be assessed from the full symptom history, examination, and appropriate tests.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Meaning
A fever that returns on each day.
What it tells you
A timing pattern, not a specific diagnosis.
Useful record
Temperature method, timing, symptoms, medicines, and exposures.

Understanding the pattern

Quotidian means occurring every day. A person may feel feverish at a similar time each day, or the temperature may rise and settle in a repeated pattern. This description can help a clinician organise the history, but it does not identify one particular illness.

Daily fever can accompany infections such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, brucellosis, cellulitis, chickenpox, common cold, COVID-19, or croup, depending on age, exposure, examination findings, and other symptoms. Fever can also have non-infectious causes, so the pattern should not be used to diagnose itself.

What to do at home

Record when the temperature rises, how it was measured, associated symptoms, recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, and how much fluid you can drink. Rest, drink regularly, and use only fever medicine that is suitable for you and taken according to its label or a clinician's advice. Avoid alternating medicines unless a professional has explained how.

Arrange medical advice if the fever keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or is accompanied by a new rash, breathing symptoms, severe pain, or worsening weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with reduced immunity may need earlier review.

When urgent help is needed

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, a seizure, collapse, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading rash. An infant with a fever, or anyone who is becoming difficult to wake, needs prompt professional assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes fit your symptoms and exposures, which tests are useful, how to measure and record temperature, how long to monitor at home, and which changes should trigger urgent review.

Questions people ask

Does a daily fever identify one illness?

No. Several infections and non-infectious problems can produce recurring fever, so the wider clinical picture matters.

Should I try to force the temperature down?

Focus on fluids, comfort, and appropriate medicine advice; seek care when warning signs or persistent symptoms occur.
