Quiescent Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease can move between active periods and remission. During a quiescent phase, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, urgency and fatigue may be absent or much less troublesome. Feeling well does not always show whether inflammation has fully settled, because bowel activity can be present before symptoms become obvious. Your clinician may consider symptoms, examination findings and test results together when describing disease control.

Take Crohn's medicines as prescribed and speak with your gastroenterology team before stopping or changing them. Keep planned appointments and record new bowel changes, pain, appetite, energy and weight. Eat a varied diet that you tolerate; avoid personal triggers rather than removing broad food groups without advice. Do not smoke, and ask for support if smoking is difficult to stop. Keep a written medication list and tell clinicians about supplements or treatments bought without a prescription.

Contact your care team if diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fever, vomiting, reduced appetite or unusual tiredness returns or steadily worsens. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain with vomiting or swelling, heavy bleeding, fainting, or signs of dehydration. A GP consultation can help when access to your specialist is delayed. Blood tests may be used alongside symptoms to look for inflammation or anaemia, but results need clinical interpretation.

Ask how remission is being monitored, which symptoms should be reported promptly, and what to do after a missed dose. Discuss vaccines, nutrition, fertility or pregnancy plans, and whether blood tests or other checks are due.
