What should you know about quick-dry Plaster of Paris?

Plaster of Paris is a powder that is mixed with water and wrapped around padding to create a moulded support. The setting reaction produces warmth and makes the layers firm. Quick-dry products may become firm sooner, but the cast may still need time before it can tolerate normal use. A cast can hold a broken bone or guide a correction while tissues heal. It does not make an injury healed immediately, and the fit may change as swelling rises or falls. A clinician chooses the material and shape for the injury, age and treatment goal.

Keep the cast clean and dry unless your care team gives different bathing instructions. During the early period, support the limb and elevate it when advised to help with swelling. Move the fingers or toes that remain free, unless instructed otherwise, and use only the weight or activity permitted. Never push objects inside the cast, trim its edges or apply heat to speed drying. Check exposed skin and circulation, including colour, warmth, sensation and movement. Follow the review and imaging plan, because a cast may need adjustment if swelling changes.

Contact the treating service promptly for increasing tightness, worsening pain, burning, persistent numbness, pins and needles, pale or blue fingers or toes, or difficulty moving them. Seek urgent help if the cast breaks, becomes soaked, develops a strong odour with drainage, or is associated with severe swelling or fever. Do not wait for the next appointment when pain is escalating despite elevation and the permitted medicine. A child who cannot settle, sleep or use the exposed digits should be assessed.
