How to choose a qualified sports massage therapist

Short answer
A qualified sports massage therapist should assess your symptoms, explain the proposed technique, adapt pressure to your needs, and refer you when massage is not appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Before treatment
- A history, symptom check, movement assessment, and consent
- Pressure
- Agreed with you and changed if symptoms worsen
- Refer for review
- Severe pain, marked swelling, weakness, or concerning calf symptoms
What qualified care looks like
Sports massage is hands-on treatment aimed at muscles and surrounding soft tissues. A responsible therapist asks about your pain, training, medical history, medicines, recent injuries, and goals before treatment. They should check movement and tenderness rather than assume every sore area needs deep pressure.
Treatment may include gliding strokes, kneading, compression, or focused work around tight tissue. Pressure should be agreed with you and adjusted if symptoms become sharp, spreading, or unusually intense. Massage can feel useful for exercise-related muscle soreness, but it does not repair every injury and should not replace assessment of a significant tear or contusion.
How to prepare
Choose a practitioner who can clearly describe relevant training, professional registration where applicable, hygiene procedures, and their experience with your activity. Share the exact location and behaviour of the pain, including whether it began after impact, a sudden stretch, or gradual training.
Wear clothing that allows access while preserving your comfort. During the appointment, expect consent before hands-on work and a chance to stop. For a diagnosed muscle strain or contusion, follow the treating clinician's timing; early deep pressure over a fresh injury may aggravate bleeding, swelling, or pain.
When massage should wait
Seek medical assessment instead of massage for severe or sudden pain, major swelling, extensive bruising, weakness, loss of function, fever, or a limb that is numb or cold. New calf pain with swelling, warmth, skin colour change, or breathlessness needs urgent medical attention. A therapist should pause treatment and refer you when the pattern does not fit routine muscle soreness.
Questions to ask
Ask the therapist what they think may be causing the symptoms, what technique they recommend, and what response is expected afterward. If you have a known injury, ask your clinician when massage is safe, which area to avoid, and whether physiotherapy or myofascial release is a better match.

Questions people ask
Is deeper sports massage always more effective?
No. The useful pressure depends on the tissue, injury stage, and your response. Excessive pressure can worsen a fresh or unexplained injury.
Can massage treat a muscle strain?
It may support comfort during an appropriate recovery stage, but a strain needs assessment and a graded return to movement. Massage does not replace rehabilitation.
