What should you know about pyogenic granuloma lip removal?

A lip pyogenic granuloma may be a bright red, purple, or pink bump on the outer lip or inner lip. It can grow quickly, feel tender when rubbed, and bleed while eating, shaving, brushing, or kissing. Trauma, repeated friction, or a local irritation may contribute, although a cause is not always clear.

Because ulcers, vascular lesions, and other growths can look similar, a clinician may recommend examination and tissue testing. The lip's movement and visibility also matter when choosing how much tissue to remove.

Do not pierce, squeeze, or trim the bump yourself. Keep it from catching on teeth or jewellery, and use gentle cleansing. A dermatologist, oral surgeon, or another appropriate clinician can discuss local anaesthetic, removal of the lesion, and control of bleeding.

Curettage and cautery is one possible method: the abnormal tissue is removed and the base is treated to reduce bleeding. The clinician may also address a source of repeated rubbing. Follow instructions about keeping the site clean, protecting the lip, and attending review.

Obtain urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with continuous pressure, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or trouble swallowing or breathing. Arrange prompt review if the area repeatedly opens, changes appearance, or interferes with eating or speaking.
