Short answer

A pyogenic granuloma near the eye needs prompt specialist assessment because it can bleed and affect delicate surrounding tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Fragile red or purple growth
Common issue
Bleeding after minor contact
Special consideration
Close proximity to the eye

What the growth means

A pyogenic granuloma, also called a lobular capillary haemangioma, is usually a small red or purple growth made of extra blood vessels. It may appear on the eyelid, nearby skin or the eye's surface and can bleed after minor contact. The name does not mean it contains pus. A clinician must examine its exact position and appearance because other growths can look similar, and a lesion close to the eye needs particular care.

Treatment choices

Do not cut, burn or repeatedly rub the growth at home. Arrange assessment with an eye specialist or dermatologist who treats lesions around the eye. Treatment may involve removal and cautery, with the method adapted to the eyelid, conjunctiva and proximity to the eye. Curettage and cautery is one procedure your clinician may discuss. Keep the area clean, avoid picking and use gentle pressure with clean gauze if minor bleeding occurs.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent assessment if bleeding does not settle with gentle continuous pressure, the growth enlarges quickly, pain or swelling develops, or the eye becomes red or light-sensitive. New blurred or reduced vision, double vision, marked discharge or injury to the eyeball requires emergency eye care. Do not delay because the lesion is small; its location matters.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which part of the eye or eyelid is involved, whether a sample will be examined, how the procedure protects the eye, what dressing or drops are needed, and which bleeding or vision symptoms require immediate help.

Questions people ask

Can I remove an eye-area pyogenic granuloma myself?

No. Home removal can cause bleeding and injure delicate eye tissue.

Is every red eyelid lump a pyogenic granuloma?

No. Several lesions can look alike, so examination is needed for diagnosis.
