What Should You Know About PV Spotting in Early Pregnancy?

Spotting may be pink, red, or brown and may occur once or recur. The amount does not by itself identify the cause or show how a pregnancy is progressing. A clinician may need to assess the cervix, pregnancy location, and symptoms together.

The cervix can bleed more easily during pregnancy, including after sex or an examination. Infection, a small growth such as an endometrial polyp, or a fibroid can also contribute to bleeding. Less commonly, bleeding may be linked with cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, womb cancer, or a pregnancy complication. Some sexually transmitted infections, including [Chlamydia](/conditions/chlamydia/), can cause bleeding or discharge and need testing and treatment. Spotting can also occur without a serious underlying problem, but that cannot be confirmed from appearance alone.

Use a pad rather than a tampon, and note the colour, amount, timing, and whether the spotting follows sex or an examination. Write down cramps, pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or pain on one side. Contact your maternity service or clinician for personalised advice, particularly if the spotting returns.

A healthcare professional may ask about your last menstrual period, previous pregnancies, infection risk, medicines, and blood group. Depending on your symptoms and pregnancy stage, they may recommend an examination, pregnancy testing, blood tests, or ultrasound.

Go to emergency care for bleeding that becomes heavy, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or difficulty breathing. Fever, chills, or feeling suddenly very unwell also needs prompt assessment. These warning signs can accompany significant bleeding, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy.

Do not wait for an appointment if you feel faint or the pain is severe. If you are stable but spotting continues or recurs, arrange timely clinical advice so the cause can be assessed.

Ask whether you need an examination or tests, whether infection screening is appropriate, and which changes in bleeding or pain should trigger emergency care.
