Purple Swollen Lips: When to Get Help

Lip swelling may follow an injury, allergic contact with a food or product, insect bite, infection, or inflammation. Purple colour can come from bruising or reduced oxygen in the tissues. Angioedema is a condition that can cause sudden swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat, sometimes with hives and sometimes without a visible rash. A photograph cannot safely distinguish these causes, especially when the change is new or progressing.

Stop using a new lip product or suspected trigger, rinse the mouth if an irritating substance was involved, and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for comfort. Do not massage a rapidly swelling lip or take someone else’s prescription medicine. Note when the change started, what you ate or applied, and whether similar episodes occurred before. If symptoms are mild and stable, arrange medical advice to identify the cause.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, faintness, or blue-grey colour around the mouth. Seek prompt assessment for severe pain, fever, pus, spreading redness, or swelling after an injury. Sudden swelling can worsen quickly, so do not wait for a skin colour change to resolve if airway symptoms appear.

Ask whether the episode could be Angioedema, which triggers to avoid, whether you need an emergency plan, and what symptoms should prompt immediate treatment.
