A port wine stain is a long-lasting reddish or purplish mark caused by enlarged superficial blood vessels. Pulsed dye laser delivers selected light that is absorbed by blood in those vessels, while cooling helps protect the surface of the skin. The mark may become darker, swollen, or bruised-looking before it fades during healing.

Response varies with the stain's colour, thickness, location, age, and the person's skin tone. Deeper or thicker areas may need a different plan or additional assessment. Treatment is usually planned as a series of visits with time between them for the skin to recover.

A clinician should examine the mark and discuss whether it has changed, whether it affects vision or function, and whether any related findings need review.
