Psyllium husk and gestational diabetes

Psyllium husk is a soluble fibre that absorbs water and forms a gel in the digestive tract. It may change stool consistency and fullness, but it is not a replacement for glucose monitoring, meal planning, movement advice, or prescribed treatment. Products differ in ingredients and serving instructions. During pregnancy, your clinician also needs to consider constipation, fluid intake, medicines, and how your glucose readings respond.

Tell your clinician the product name, ingredients, and amount you plan to take. Use it only as advised, mix it with enough fluid, and follow the label directions. Keep checking glucose according to your care plan and note any change after starting it. Separate it from some medicines if your pharmacist advises this, because fibre can affect absorption. Routine antenatal care and a glucose tolerance test may be part of monitoring; a growth scan may also be recommended when clinically appropriate.

Contact your maternity team promptly for repeated glucose readings outside your agreed range, vomiting that prevents fluids, severe abdominal pain, marked bloating, or inability to pass stool or gas. Get urgent help for fainting, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not take extra fibre to correct a glucose reading.
