Psoriasis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: What You Should Know

Psoriasis affects skin and nails, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that commonly causes inflammation in joints. A person with psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis, which can resemble rheumatoid arthritis in some ways, but the conditions are not interchangeable. Hand swelling, finger stiffness, joint pain, and morning joint stiffness can occur in several disorders. The pattern of joints involved, nail or skin changes, examination findings, and symptom history help clinicians tell them apart.

Record which joints swell, how long stiffness lasts after waking, whether symptoms are symmetrical, and whether skin or nail changes flare at the same time. Arrange a medical review if symptoms persist or interfere with grip, walking, or sleep. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication when suitable, along with movement and strengthening advice. Do not start, stop, or change prescribed medicine without speaking with the prescriber.

Seek timely assessment for a persistently swollen joint, progressive loss of movement, or morning stiffness that keeps returning. Get urgent help for a hot, very painful joint with fever, sudden major weakness, new numbness, or a rapidly worsening reaction after medication. A painful red eye or sudden vision change also needs prompt care and should be mentioned alongside your joint history.

Ask whether your pattern fits rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, another inflammatory condition, or a non-inflammatory problem. Discuss whether blood tests or imaging could help, which treatment goals matter first, and what daily movement is appropriate while swelling is active.
