What should you know about PSA readings for prostate cancer?

PSA is produced mainly by prostate tissue. After a diagnosis, clinicians interpret readings with biopsy findings, scans, examination, symptoms, and the treatment already given. A falling reading may suggest treatment is affecting PSA-producing cells, while a stable or rising pattern may prompt review; neither pattern is interpreted in isolation.

The meaning of a result also depends on timing. Surgery, radiotherapy, Brachytherapy, hormone treatment, and Targeted Radioisotope Therapy can each produce different PSA patterns. Ask which trend your team expects and what would change the plan.

Keep a dated list of PSA readings, treatments, medicines, and symptoms. Ask whether the same laboratory method was used and whether a recent procedure, infection, or treatment change could affect comparison. Follow-up may include examination, imaging, or discussion of Radiotherapy, Prostate Removal Surgery, or other options when appropriate.
