What should you know about pruritus treatment at home?

Short answer
Home care for pruritus focuses on cooling and moisturising the skin while avoiding triggers that intensify itching.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First measures
- Cool the skin and moisturise regularly

- Persistent, widespread, or unexplained itching
Why the skin may itch
Itching can come from dry skin, a new product, eczema, psoriasis, hives, scabies, or a skin infection. The location and appearance matter: scaling suggests dryness or inflammation, while burrows, clustered spots, or itching among household contacts needs a different assessment. Scratching can break the skin and create soreness or infection, even when the original trigger was mild.
Steps at home
Take short lukewarm showers, use a fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, and apply a thick bland moisturiser soon after drying. Keep nails short, use a cool damp cloth, and choose loose cotton clothing. Stop any newly introduced fragrance, cosmetic, detergent, or topical product if it seems connected. Avoid vigorous scratching and very hot water. Do not apply steroid, antihistamine, or anti-infective products to an unexplained rash without checking that the product suits your symptoms and health history.
When to seek care
Book an appointment when itching persists, disrupts sleep, affects much of the body, or returns without a clear trigger. Seek urgent help if itching comes with facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which causes fit the rash pattern, whether anyone close to you needs assessment, which ingredients to avoid, and whether medicines or medical conditions could be contributing.

Questions people ask
Can moisturiser stop all itching?
It may ease itch caused by dryness, but ongoing or widespread itching can have another cause that needs diagnosis.
Should I scratch an itchy rash?
Try cooling and covering the area instead; scratching can damage the skin and allow infection.
