What should you know about proximal IT band syndrome treatment?

Short answer
Proximal IT band syndrome treatment usually combines activity adjustment, physiotherapy, movement retraining, and a gradual return to loading.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What proximal IT band syndrome means
The iliotibial band is a strong strip of connective tissue running along the outside of the thigh. Irritation near the outer knee can develop when running, cycling, hills, sudden training changes, or repeated knee bending overload the area. Pain is often felt on the outside of the knee and may appear during activity rather than at rest. A clinician also considers other causes of outer-knee pain, because the location alone does not confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment and self-care
Temporarily reduce the activity that provokes pain, especially downhill running, speed work, or repeated deep knee bends. Keep comfortable movement if it does not increase symptoms later. Physiotherapy can address hip and trunk strength, leg control, flexibility, and a staged loading plan. Gait retraining may help modify stride or running mechanics when movement patterns are contributing. Sports massage may ease surrounding muscle tightness, but it should complement—not replace—rehabilitation. A cortisone injection may be discussed for persistent local irritation after examination, with the timing and suitability decided by a clinician.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain keeps returning, limits normal walking, or does not settle after reducing the provoking activity. Seek prompt medical care after a significant injury, or if the knee becomes markedly swollen, hot, red, locked, unstable, or difficult to bear weight on. Calf swelling, chest symptoms, fever, or rapidly worsening pain needs urgent attention because it may point beyond a straightforward overuse problem.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Could another knee problem be causing this outer-knee pain? Which activities should I pause, and what can I continue? How will hip strength, gait, and running load be assessed? What signs show that I can progress exercises or return to sport?

Questions people ask
Can I keep exercising with IT band pain?
Often, lower-impact activity that stays comfortable can continue, while the provoking movement is reduced and rebuilt gradually.
Does massage treat the underlying problem?
Massage may reduce surrounding tightness, but strengthening, movement work, and load progression address broader contributors.
